Yacht Generator Maintenance: A Practical Spare Parts Guide for Engineers

Generators run almost continuously on a superyacht, at anchor and alongside. This guide covers service intervals, common failure points and the generator spares to keep on board.

On many superyachts the generators log more hours than the main engines. They run at anchor, during guest periods and often in port. That makes them one of the most important systems to keep supplied with the right spare parts.

Service intervals start with the manual

Manufacturers such as Kohler, Northern Lights, Onan, Fischer Panda and Caterpillar set service intervals by running hours. The manual — not a generic schedule — is the basis. What matters on board is tracking hours accurately and ordering service parts before the interval arrives, not when it is due.

Routine service parts

  • Oil filters and engine oil
  • Primary and secondary fuel filters, including separator elements
  • Air filter elements
  • Raw water pump impellers and gaskets
  • Drive belts
  • Zinc anodes in heat exchangers
  • Coolant and thermostat

The parts that cause unplanned downtime

  • Raw water impellers — a failed impeller leads to overheating within minutes. Keep several.
  • Heat exchanger fouling — scale or debris reduces cooling capacity, especially in warm water.
  • Exhaust elbows and mixing elbows — corrosion over time can restrict flow or leak.
  • Sensors and senders — oil pressure and temperature senders can trigger shutdowns.
  • AVR (automatic voltage regulator) and control modules — rarely fail, but long lead times when they do.
  • Starter motors and batteries — often overlooked until a generator will not start.

Building a sensible generator spares kit

A good rule: routine service parts for at least two full services per generator, plus the critical items above that would stop the unit. For long-lead electronics like AVRs or control boards, it is worth checking lead times now so you know your exposure.

Information that speeds up sourcing

  • Generator make, model and serial number
  • Engine model and serial (can differ from the genset)
  • Photos of type plates and the part itself
  • Part numbers from the parts manual where possible

With that information, parts can usually be matched quickly and shipped to your yacht wherever it is. Send us one request via our yacht spare parts service. Planning a yard period? Read the refit spare parts checklist.
