Why Preventive Maintenance Is the Chief Engineer's Most Important Responsibility

Reactive maintenance — fixing things when they break — is expensive, disruptive and avoidable. A hydraulic hose that fails in port costs a few hundred euros to replace. The same failure at sea, or during a guest trip, costs multiples of that in emergency sourcing, crew overtime, potential damage to surrounding systems and reputational impact with the owner.

Preventive maintenance is the systematic effort to catch problems before they become failures.   • Valve clearance check and adjustment
  • Coolant system flush and antifreeze replacement
  • Intercooler cleaning
  • Full alignment check on propulsion shafts

Critical spares to keep on board

  • Raw water impellers for all pumps (engine cooling, watermaker, AC)
  • Primary and secondary fuel filters
  • Engine oil (minimum one full change quantity)
  • V-belts and serpentine belts for all engines and generators
  • Thermostat for each engine
  • Injector sealing washers

Generator Systems

Generators are often the most neglected major system on superyachts because they 'just run'. This is a mistake — generator failures account for a significant proportion of serious on board electrical problems.

Service items specific to generators

  • Oil and filter change per manufacturer interval (often more frequent than main engines due to continuous operation)
  • Air filter cleaning and replacement
  • Load bank test annually to confirm full rated output
  • Control panel battery — check voltage and replace if weak
  • Exhaust system inspection for carbon buildup and water trap condition
  • Shore power changeover testing

Electrical and Automation Systems

Regular inspection items

  • Main switchboard — visual inspection for signs of overheating, loose connections, tripped breakers
  • Battery banks — voltage check, electrolyte levels (wet cell), terminal corrosion
  • Shore power cable and connector — condition check, heat marks
  • GFCI and RCD testing on all circuits
  • Navigation lights — function test all circuits
  • Bilge pump float switches — manual and automatic operation test

Annual items

  • Thermal imaging survey of main electrical panel and distribution boards (identifies hot connections before they become failures)
  • Battery capacity test — particularly for older battery banks
  • Inverter/charger service
  • UPS systems for navigation and communication equipment — battery replacement per manufacturer interval

Automation and monitoring systems

  • BMS (Battery Management System) calibration
  • Alarm system test — all sensors, all zones
  • SCADA or vessel monitoring system software updates
  • Backup manual overrides for all automated systems — confirm function

Deck and Anchor Systems

Windlass and anchor system

  • Gypsy and drum condition — check for wear and correct engagement
  • Brake adjustment and condition
  • Chain counter calibration
  • Anchor chain inspection — check for stretch, corrosion and cracked links. Replace any chain that has reached its service life
  • Anchor chain marking — confirm markings are clear and accurate
  • Swivel and shackle condition

Hydraulic deck equipment

  • Hydraulic fluid level and condition (colour, clarity)
  • All hose runs — visual inspection for abrasion, chafing and UV damage
  • Cylinder rod condition — check for corrosion, pitting and seal leaks
  • Pressure relief valve function test
  • Davit and crane load test annually

Mooring systems

  • Cleats and fairleads — check fastenings and condition
  • Mooring lines — inspect for wear, UV degradation and core damage
  • Fender condition and securing points

Safety and Compliance Systems

Safety equipment has mandatory service intervals. Missing these not only creates risk — it creates liability and potential flag state compliance issues.

Annual items

  • Liferaft service — must be completed at approved service station
  • EPIRB battery and hydrostatic release unit — replace per expiry date on label
  • SART (Search and Rescue Transponder) — battery check and function test
  • Flares — check expiry dates and replace as needed
  • Fire extinguishers — annual inspection, hydrostatic test per schedule
  • Fixed fire suppression system — annual service by approved contractor
  • Firefighting equipment — hoses, nozzles, breathing apparatus — condition check

Five-year items

  • Liferaft hydrostatic release units
  • EPIRB full service
  • Immersion suit inspection and recertification

Building a Spares Inventory Strategy

A preventive maintenance programme is only as good as the spares available to support it. The goal is not to carry every possible spare — it is to carry the right spares based on risk, lead time and criticality.

Prioritise spares that are:

  • Used in systems that are critical to vessel operation or safety
  • From manufacturers with long lead times or limited distribution
  • Consumable items used frequently in routine maintenance

Review your spares inventory before each major cruising season and after each refit. Items used during maintenance should be replenished immediately, not left for the next order.
