Express Freight to the Med: Getting Yacht Parts to Your Vessel Fast
When a part fails in peak season, every day counts. How express freight for yacht parts actually works — and what slows it down.
It is the middle of July, the yacht is in Palma, and a chiller compressor has just failed. The part exists — in a warehouse in Germany or a factory in Italy. Now the question is how fast it can physically reach the vessel. Express freight for yacht parts is its own discipline, and knowing how it works saves days.
The main routes into the Med
- Air freight — fastest for anything that fits on a plane. Same-week delivery is realistic from most European suppliers; overnight is possible for small, urgent items. Watch out for dangerous goods rules: batteries, pressurised cylinders, refrigerants and some chemicals face restrictions.
- Road freight / dedicated van — often the sweet spot within Europe. A dedicated van from northern Europe to the western Med typically takes two to four days and avoids airport handling and cut-off times.
- Courier networks — fine for small boxes, but a yacht is not a standard delivery address. Someone has to receive, clear and deliver to the quay.
- On-board courier (hand-carry) — for the truly critical small part, a courier flying with the item as luggage is sometimes the fastest legal option.
What actually slows shipments down
- Customs clearance — the single biggest variable, especially outside the EU. See our guide on customs and import for yacht parts.
- Addressing and delivery — "the big white yacht in port" is not an address. Berth number, marina name, port agent details and a local contact number matter.
- Cut-off times and weekends — a shipment that misses Friday's departure often arrives Tuesday.
- Dangerous goods classification — discovered late, this can ground a shipment entirely.
How to make it faster
- Order with the correct part number the first time — a wrong part doubles the timeline. Our article on the real cost of a broken part in peak season shows what delays actually cost.
- Use a port agent or a receiving address that handles yacht deliveries daily.
- Decide the Incoterms upfront so nobody argues about who clears customs while the box sits in a warehouse.
Our yacht spare parts service arranges sourcing and express delivery to vessels across the Mediterranean as one process — part identification, freight and delivery to the quay included.
